highlander ip-2 + internal mic

Here is a very, very quick recording I made to check out the brand new pickup I’ve installed in my Larrivee acoustic guitar.  It’s an undersaddle pickup blended with an internal microphone, all hidden discretely inside the guitar.  I’ve added some reverb and a touch of  compression, but no EQ.  Sounds great, eh?

progress of “the muse”

Recording of my new album “The Muse” is well under way.  I’ve recorded all the drums, french horn and trumpet parts.  By the end of next week I should have all the sax, flute and bass parts down.  That leaves the guitar, piano and trombone to record.  It’s sounding great!

Super-duo Hector return to Jester Studio today to lay down some new tracks.  Excited.  Gemma has a fantastic voice and is always fun to work with, and Andrew is my go-to drummer for everything these days.  Check out their mySpace page.

new album in progress: the muse

About 3 years ago I wrote two pieces of music for acoustic guitar + ensemble of 10 musicians.  I’d always intended for this to stretch out into a bigger composition for recording in the studio.  I also wanted to be able to perform it live.

In the last 3 weeks I have been working on nothing else, and I have completed the composition, made up of 9 parts each representing one of the 9 muses of Greek mythology.  Project title: “The Muse”. I’m very, very excited about it.  I’ve already begun recording the album and started making plans for a live performance in St Andrews in October, by which time the album will be completed and available for sale.  I’m also planning to make this a double album, packaging it with my unreleased solo acoustic guitar album “Woodenboy”.

So… watch this space!

the alleycats: “press paws”

Here is the new album by the mixed a capella group from St Andrews University, The Alleycats. This is the second album of theirs that I have produced, and they just keep getting better.  The highlight for me is the phenomenal arrangement of Violet Hill by Coldplay… how they got from that pretty boring song to the most beautiful a capella I’ve ever recorded I don’t know!

Last year’s album (Meow! That’s What I Call Music) is still available and is great fun too, featuring the lineup that appeared on the BBC television show “Last Choir Standing”.
